STALOS from a tutor’s perspective
by Florence Rogers (PhD Candidate, University of St Andrews)
Upon reaching the end of my PhD, I’ve found that engaging in STALOS has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of the degree. I’d been a little unsure before we began whether the students would be enthusiastic to learn Latin in their lunchtimes, but I quickly discovered that these kids who signed up to take on extra work in their busy timetables had an appetite to learn. It was so encouraging to teach them through the basics of Latin and watch as they discovered different parts they enjoyed, whether it was Latin composition about werewolves, developing a deeper understanding of syntax, or discussing problematic representations of slavery. While the program was a decent time commitment, especially without a car, it was an incredibly worthwhile experience of which to be a part. I’m proud that the program is helping to increase access to the subject I love.
