STALOS from a tutor’s perspective

Tutoring for STALOS for the last three years has been rewarding in many ways. Getting that little bit extra financial security without too much of a time commitment, and building up my teaching experience, was really valuable to me, especially in my first year. It was also really fun, mainly because of the kids. They’ve always been very engaged in the lessons, bringing their whole personalities, and it’s wonderful to see how much progress they make in a few short weeks from no Latin at all to translating whole passages. It’s definitely the good life version of teaching – popping in for an hour at lunchtime, teaching some Latin to kids who are genuinely keen to learn, then swanning off to work on my thesis a bit more. Having that set commitment every week also helped me to structure my week, which can be one of the challenges of the otherwise glamorous PhD lifestyle. It’s something I’m very glad to have on my CV that I can talk about in job interviews, but even more than that it was an enjoyable, worthwhile, and not-too-taxing experience to have.
Teaching Latin to kids who want to learn is always a good time.
